Whether you are a new driver or sending your teen driver out by themselves for the first time, vehicle safety features have come a long way since you or your parents were first starting to drive. Let’s take a look at some of the available features now!

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) – This technology uses radar sensors to keep your vehicle at a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. If every car on the road had and used this technology it would nearly eliminate traffic jams due to the stop and go driving! If the car senses that the vehicle in front of you is slowing down or stopping your vehicle responds accordingly. If your car senses a crash is about to take place, the Crash Imminent Braking (CIB) or Dynamic Brake Support (DBS) or a system called AEB meaning Automatic Emergency Braking kicks into play to help reduce the seriousness of a collision if not completely avoiding it. These systems will sound an audible alarm, some will vibrate the steering wheel or seat, if the driver doesn’t react the car takes over and applies the brakes to try to avoid the collision.

Backup Camera – This is exactly as it sounds, a camera mounted discreetly behind your vehicle that comes on when you are in reverse to help you see what is behind you. I have to admit, I love having a backup camera in my car. When I am in a parking spot I can put my car in reverse and see behind me and what is coming very easily. Remember to still do a quick check before getting into your vehicle to make sure there isn’t anything directly behind you, such as a bike, pet, ball, etc.

Lane Departure Warning (LDW) or Lane Keeping System (LKS) – Like the name implies, this system helps you stay in your lane. It will make an audible noise and possibly send a vibration to the steering wheel or seat to let you know you are crossing the lines on the road. This is done with a series of cameras and/or lasers.

There are many other features available today as well as many coming out every year! These types of systems help keep you and your family safe or even you new teen driver, and help give you some much-needed peace of mind!
